I guess it makes sense that there’s such a thing, but who knew it existed? I didn’t, until I read about it on Slickdeals.net tonight. I’m talking about the CHDK — the Canon Hacker’s Development Kit. It’s live, it’s free, and it’s open source, of course.

Basically this is a temporary firmware hack or enhancement as they call it. It’s safe. It’s not permanent and it won’t brick your camera. It installs on your memory card and to turn things off you just restart the camera. How cool is that? Jaw dropping cool, if you ask me.

Lifehacker has a detailed post about it here, so I won’t bother rehashing the details. But here, in brief, are some of the features you may be able to add to your Canon camera with CHDK:

  • Capture images in RAW format
  • Longer video capture times and more compression options
  • More info on your screen including battery life, histograms, depth of focus
  • Additional settings including longer exposure times, faster shutter speeds, automatic bracketing

And the list goes on. You can even use it to have your camera run programs!

Is this amazing or what? Can you tell that I’m impressed?

I’ll shut up now and you can go visit the CHDK wiki to learn more about this amazing thing.

Amazing.

PS — let’s hope Google doesn’t censor this because it has the word hacking in it. Tee hee.
